These three strategies combined will bring down the regime.
Whether you are a Bangladeshi in Bangladesh, a member of the diaspora, or an ally looking to help, this is the time to get involved in the defense and rebirth of democracy in one of the world’s most populous nations. You can choose to keep your involvement a secret, in which only the founder knows your identity.
Strategy #1: Withhold all remittances.
The United States, for example, has recently become the largest source of remittances to Bangladesh, with at least $23 billion sent back every year. (Source) We here wield extreme power when it comes to the financial health of this regime, especially since the foreign reserves of this regime are less than $20 billion. (Source) This means that remittance senders from the US alone can wipe out the regime’s vital foreign reserves by withholding remittances for a year. We must commit, no matter how much it hurts us, to withhold all remittances to Bangladesh until this government steps down. Use non-traditional ways to get funding to you the people you love and are responsible for. Don’t use bank channels.
Strategy #2: Boycott all "Made in Bangladesh" garments.
The United States, again for example, is the biggest purchaser of Bangladesh-made garments. This is a $10 billion gift to the regime in Dhaka, and the people of Bangladesh see practically little to none of it. Once Bangladeshis overseas make this public call to stop the purchase of Bangladesh-made garments, we will be take a direct shot at the spine of this regime. Purchasers in the United States and other democratic nations will quickly adjust supply chains, and the ripple affects will go through the Hasina administration like a lightning bolt.
The garments workers of Bangladesh have been robbed of their future by this government and the factory owners. They were promised a raise from an extremely inhumane salary of $75 per month to the extremely inhumane salary of $113 per month. However, the government of Bangladesh has allowed the value of the taka to fall nearly half against the US dollar, to the major benefit of the factory owners and exporters, but essentially sending the garments workers even further into poverty than they were before.
Garments has been a good moneymaker for government and the factory owners — the people of Bangladesh have seen little to no benefit from it. This is not an attack on the industry; it is an attack on the greed and corruption that has led to the slavery-like system that exploits the people of Bangladesh, and props up this homicidal regime.
Strategy #3: Secure sanctions against the regime.
They have committed murder. They must be tried in a court of law. When crimes of this scale occur in democratic nations, other democratic nations sanction the perpetrators to bring back the rule of law and the protection of civilians. That’s exactly what we want from the democratic nations of the world, led by the United States. Therefore, we will be leveraging the geographic diversity of Bangladeshis, particularly in the United States, to educate and lobby members of Congress — Senators and Representatives, Republicans and Democrats — to voice their outrage against the Hasina regime’s murders, and then to follow these words with actions to stifle the regime, and lead to the free and fair elections we demand, in every district.
These strategies only work with your involvement.
Let’s dismantle this dictatorial regime together. Get involved. Become a member, whether publicly or in secret.
